Food Culture and German Traditions

German food is an integral part of everyday German traditions and culture. Almost all events, whether they be private or public, will have exceptional tasting food served, along with great tasting beer.

Great German food varies significantly from region to region. Individual areas have become renowned for a particular culinary delicacy. Nurnberg for instance is well known the Nurnberger bratwurst. On the other hand, Munich is renowned for its Weiswurst sausage delicacy. Amazingly, these delicacies are available from the simplest of places. They can be found at the market place at most town centers, or even at the local train station.

There is also great rivalry between the regions as to who has the tastiest German recipes. As far back as one can remember, the regional rivalry between the north and south of the country has been very strong. There is always a healthy banter between the local citizens and claims for the title of best food recipes.

Germany's most well known food are sausages and sauerkraut. However there are a huge amount of traditional German foods on offer that most people of other nations wouldn’t even be aware of. These include many types of potato salads, potato dumplings, and the most unique flavorsome meat dishes. A well hidden secret is the number of deliscious fresh salad recipes on offer, accompanied by spectacular salad dressings.

And so as not to forget those who enjoy the sweet foods in life, the variety and quality of cakes and pastries is unrivalled. Most cafes will offer the most deliscious layer cakes that simply melt in your mouth, and are unrivalled anywhere around the world.

Sadly, of recent times, the once well known skills required to prepare famous signature dishes of Germany is on the decline. Large food outlets now conveniently offer ready to cook German dishes such as German dumplings, sauerbraten, and sauerkraut etc. Cakes can be easily purchased from almost any bakery. Soon there will be no need for dining furniture and everyone will be eating in front of the TV.

As a result of such convenience, our present generation harldy knows where to begin to prepare a traditional German meal.

German culture has close ties with German food. With essential German food culture at risk, it is important that the art of German cooking be revitalized. This must be of concern for Germans living in Germany. Germans who have gone to live in other parts of the world, as well as their descendants, are facing similar issues.

Ensuring that the German food culture survives is critical, and we need to be proactive in our efforts. We need to make every effort to teach our young people the cooking techniques and recipes of past generations. By doing this the German customs and traditions will also remain alive.
