How To Barbeque Safely

Long ago, barbequing was primarily a summer activity.Which was understandable considering all the grilling done was done on charcoal and it took 30 minutes or better for the coals to "gray out". Then another 20 minutes to cook the meat.

Now with modern gas grills, a grill can come up to perfect grilling temperature in a couple minutes flat - basically cutting the prep time in half. But along with all this speed and convenience has come a longer season for grilling that even includes winter. Now that people are barbequing out all year long, safely preparing and barbequeing foods has become more important.

So Let's Get Right Down to it With Some Important Barbequing Safety Tips.

Firstly, make sure you carefully inspect the expiration dates on any meats purchased. Seriously folks, supermarket workers make mistakes. Often unsafe meat goes home with some unfortuante person. Let it not be your family. Really folks, it only take a second or two so make the effort.

Secondly, always marinate meats in the refrigerator. Don't put your meat in the marinate and leave it out on the counter. Bacteria multiply rapidly. So be safe and marinate in the refrigerator especially if you're doing an overnight marinate.

Thirdly, separate "juicy" meats like chicken and poultry from vegetable and other barbeque foods you buy. Separate them with plastic bags. Chicken is particularly a "dirty" meat. Juice in packaged chicken will very quickly cross contaminate other foods in your grocery bag.

Lastly, don't let your meats come up to room temperature. Take them directly from the fridge and throw them on the grill. And never let them sit in the sun while you're prepping other things for your barbeque. Again bacteria very rapidly multiply in favorable conditions: read warm temperatures.

Taking a little extra care when you barbeque will ensure that you have both a safe and delicious barbeque.

Treat Yourself To Organic Flavored Coffee

With the millions of coffee drinkers worldwide there is a rise in demand for not only organic coffee but also for organic flavored coffee. Many coffee growers have discovered alternative and safe ways to improve the growing process. They now use organic fertilizer and other earth friendly ideas to enhance and protect their plants.

Organic coffee bean - what is it exactly? This is coffee that is grown without using enhancement chemicals. It has been done that way since time before chemical companies intruded. Farmers plant the seeds, irrigate the roots and let the sun do the rest.

Natural and organic are not interchangeable. Other truthful claims, such as free-range, hormone-free, and natural, can still appear on food labels. However, don't confuse these terms with "organic." Only food labeled "organic" has been certified as meeting USDA organic standards.

By choosing organic flavored coffee, even though it may cost a bit more, it is a simple extension of your personal beliefs that everything we do should help, rather than harm, the world in which we live.

Organic coffee, like other organic or all natural foods, is sold in an entirely different section of your local supermarket. This type of coffee is sold in caffeinated and decaffeinated as well as flavored with vanilla, chocolate hazelnut or anything else you can think of that regular coffee comes in. Organic flavored coffee (like other all-natural products) must contain a seal indicating it is, in fact, organic. This is an FDA classification and cannot be overlooked.

For us, high quality extends beyond the excellence of our roasts. It includes high quality in the growing and methods of farming, and fair and respectful treatment of those who grow our fine coffee. By supporting Fair Trade Certified products provides an additional opportunity for us and our customers to have a meaningful impact on the working and living conditions faced by many who grow, harvest and process coffee throughout the world.

Each year over 40 million gallons of chemical pesticides, untold millions of gallons of herbicides, and billions of pounds of fungicides are used by the international coffee industry. You can see how you are saving the earth by supporting organically grown coffees

Organic flavored coffee is a product that is higher in quality, delivers better taste, and can be offered at the same price as a high-quality non-organic product and when prepared in a French press coffee maker it is even better

Popular Tex-Mex Cuisine

Different states in America offer different types of Mexican food. One type is Tex-Mex food. It is found in the state of Texas and consists of Mexican-American dishes. The dishes made in the Tex-Mex style are similar to regular Mexican foods such as burritos, but the difference is the type of chile pepper they use. In Tex-Mex food, green chile pepper is used. The peppers are grown throughout the state. It is becoming popular in other states also. Green chile pepper can be used in just about any type of dish including amburgers.

Tex-Mex is considered "America's oldest original cuisine" by some. Tex-Mex got its name back in 1875. It started when the Texas-Mexican
Railway was nicknamed Tex-Mex to refer to the railroad and describe the Mexicans that were born in Texas. The mission era blended Texas foods with Spanish and Mexican. It got its name by the Tejanos (Hispanics born in Texas). The different regions of the state kept the foods similar to each other. Eventually other meats such as goat and cow's head gained popularity. In the twentieth century, cheese was added because it was readily available and
inexpensive in the United States.

More than 60% of the population of Texas has ancestors that were from Mexico. It is no surprise as to why that state has become popular for its Tex-Mex
dishes. Tex-Mex is most popular in the South Central part of the state, which includes the cities of Austin and San Antonio. Tex-Mex dishes commonly use the ingredients of garlic, sour cream, cilantro, beans, avocado, and chorizo, which is a spicy Mexican sausage that originated from Spain. Chiles are also important in Tex-Mex dishes.

The chilies range from sweet and mild to hot fiery and are added to a variety of dishes. Some chiles that are used in Tex-Mex cuisine include ancho, jalapeno, and the hottest of them all, the habanero pepper. The food is contemporary and can easily be made. There are dishes that require more detail such as casseroles, black bean soup, and bunuelos, which is fried bread that is eaten with sugar and cinnamon that is sprinkled on the top.

Tex-Mex cuisine contains large amounts of beef, spices, and beans. Texas-style chili, crispy chalupas,
and fajitas are all Tex-Mex originals. A serving of tortillas with hot sauce or salsa is another Texas invention. Other tasty creations include seven-layer dip, and tamale pie. Mango margaritas are a modern drink in the Tex-Mex menu. Many of these recipes are simple and require little skill, but there are some foods that involve preparation of another recipe to complete the main dish.

One dish that is shouts Texas, is chili. It is a combination of meat and spices, with no beans added. Sauce is the main ingredient of the chili. Chili started by the Chili Queens of San Antonio. They made the chili to sell at stands for cowboys who came to the town.

Whatever restaurant you go to, you are likely to have chile sauce on top of your dish. If you are not used to the hotness, you might have to take it slow. Start with small foods like salsa. You will get used to the strength and before you know it, you will be buying your own chile to create dishes from your home. The chile can be sold throughout the year and can be stored easily in the freezer. You will be able to enjoy a touch of Tex-Mex style cuisine with your Mexican food favorites.

Durable Stainless Steel Cookware

There are plenty of quality cookware collections available on the market including Calphalon, All-Clad, T-Fal and others. Celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse has a line of cookware which is made by All-Clad and recently Kitchen Aid and the quality knife maker Henckles have produced cookware that is out on the market.

When looking for low cost quality cookware sets you might want consider products that are made from a combination of stainless steel and aluminum. They are made with a sturdy long lasting construction and they are excellent at evenly distributing heat, including on the sides of the pots and pans. If you purchase cookware made with aluminum be sure you buy quality cookware since low quality thin gauge aluminum pans can easily warp and become dented and they usually will not distribute heat evenly. The low price cookware items typically utilize enamel coated aluminum which is susceptible to chipping.

If you are considering purchasing all clad non-stick cookware search for pots and pans that have been manufactured with a thick coating or a coating that has been combined with ceramic titanium. These types of non-stick pans are available and will last longer than the lower priced versions.

Their cookware is very sturdy and you will notice the significant increase in weight of these pans when compared to most other stainless steel cookware. Their handles are riveted on and are very sturdy. All clad cookware has inspectors check the cookware at every stage during the manufacturing process to make sure all their pots and pans meet their quality standards. They produce premium stainless steel cookware however their pots and pans are more expensive than most other brands.

Cast Iron Cookware

Some people looking for quality cookware end up purchasing a few items made from cast iron. A cast iron skillet is excellent at retaining heat as well as searing meat. When looking for a top of the line Dutch oven experts suggest you choose non-reactive enamel coated Dutch oven made out of cast iron. These pots are expensive; however they will last a very long time with proper care.  Experts suggest that lower priced, inferior coated Dutch ovens easily chip.

The typical Calphalon pan has been designed with a tri-ply construction consisting of a layer of aluminum situated between two layers of stainless steel. The Calphalon Tri-Ply stainless and Calphalon Contemporary Stainless collections are manufactured with the aluminum core that continues up the sides of the pans.

Cuisinart’s Chef’s Classic stainless steel is similar to Kitchen Aid due to being constructed with a layer of aluminum situated between two layers of steel and this collection has received favorable reviews. If you enjoy cooking and cook often you might wan to consider purchasing a set of premium stainless steel cookware.

How To Find Low Cost Quality Cookware Sets

When it comes to shopping for a new cookware set, everyone has different things in mind. Not everyone wants or needs the same things where cookware is concerned. One thing, however, that everyone thinks about, is where they can find low cost quality cookware sets. Usually, just by buying a set, you are saving money compared to purchasing your pieces individually. But as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for, even with cookware sets. One thing to remember is that there's a difference between cheap and low cost. Cheap typically refers to the quality of an item instead of the price. Below  are some of the best options for low cost quality cookware sets.

Non Stick Film

This is because if the quality is bad, the low cost quality cookware you buy will end up costing you more as you will need to spend more money, time and effort to go out and buy new cookware after this one warps, breaks, rusts or gets damaged in some other way. Another way in which low cost quality cookware can be a nightmare is if the non-stick of the pan starts to peel. While results are inconclusive, many studies have shown that f the non-stick film on the bottom of pans starts to chip and peel, it can cause the food to be contaminated sometimes even to the extent of becoming a cause of cancer and therefore should be disposed off immediately.

Aluminum Cookware

Aluminum cookware is one of the two most reasonably priced options on the market. It usually comes in one of two different types, anodized and enamel coated cookware. Although they are fairly inexpensive, both of these have their drawbacks. The anodized aluminum is not safe for dishwashers and is vulnerable to staining. The enamel coated aluminum has a tendency to chip and will warp relatively easy. Although aluminum will serve your purpose if your purpose is simply cooking, it's not something that you would want to put on display. You will also probably need to replace it every several years. Even with it's reasonable price, aluminum doesn't seem to fit the bill of low cost quality cookware sets.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel cookware is probably the most widely used cookware for household cooking. Many restaurants also rely on stainless steel cookware. There are a number of reasons for this. Obviously it's one of the most affordable types on the market, but it holds a few advantages over aluminum. First it's more durable and longer lasting than aluminum and will usually not warp over time. Staining won't be a problem either with this type of material. Stainless steel is also easy to clean, either by hand or in a dishwasher. If cared for properly, stainless steel cookware will look good enough for storage in plain view, if you like. Of the cookware sets at the lower end of the price scale, stainless steel seems to be the best option if your looking for low cost quality cookware sets.

Worries About Coupon Craze

Coupon exposure rates enormously, providing access to more coupons for more stores and more products than ever before. In comparison, it is similiar to putting a gamiling table in the living room of the addict. The exhilaration of saving money can often become an end in and of itself for many people, especially women. Demonstrate that marketing professionals are well aware of this phenomenon, online coupon websites with names such as Coupon Addictioncom and Eve’sAddictioncom. Coupons

There are two concerns in regards to coupon insane shoppers. The 1st worry is that they could spend more money than they would have without the coupons. Creating strife or tension within the family forms a second concern many bargain hunters face. Grocery Coupons

Exaggerated obsession about landing a good deal leads shoppers to buy quantities of items they do not need at stores they do not usually frequent. Buying something with a 50% coupon doesn't save you any money if the item will not be put to use. Driving miles away to a store because you have a coupon you can redeem there may cost more in gas money than the amount saved on the purchase. In both cases, you have spent money you would not have spent had you never obtained the coupons! Internet Coupons

If someone feels his or her craving for coupons is out of control, following the tips below will ease the problem.

1-When printing online coupons, remember to include the cost of your printer ink. Only print the coupons you know you will have the opportunity to use. Consider not only the product or store, but also the expiry date of the coupon. Don't even print the coupon if you don't plan to shop again before the coupon's expiration date.

2-Making plans is extremely important especially when you use grocery coupons to lessen the cost of your food expenditures. Plan meals and make a grocery list before you shop. Once you have a list of your actual needs, search for suitable online coupons. On the other hand, you can plan what you want to cook based on the coupons you already have. This way you are able to make full use of your coupons before they reach their expiration dates.

3-Take an inventory and list all of the products currently in your cupboards, pantry, or closets. If you are finding yourself buying large amounts of items only because you have a coupon for it and those products are then stored for long periods of time then you may fit the definition of a coupon addict. Be very honest and write down everything then begin to use it. Don't buy more of an item you have stockpiled, even if you have new coupons, until you have used up what you already bought.

4-Implicit in the preceding point is that you must train yourself to pass up bargain opportunities for products you do not need. This is tough for individuals who are used to using coupons. It involves honestly deciding whether you need a product and if you are likely to use it in the near future, especially for perishable food or health items. When buying non-perishables, you must take into consideration whether you have the space to store your great finds.

5-Those of you who lack the willpower to apply the above recommendations have two more options. you to satisfy your addiction by proxy.

Introduce a friend to the wonders of online coupons, and help her to save on her bills. The thrill should be almost the same, but you will not be spending your money on things you do not need. The second option will not limit your spending, but it will give it new purpose. Clean up your house and help a good cause by donating your excess items and foodstuffs to charity.

The time consuming nature of online couponing is behind the second issue that may be a concern for coupon crazed shoppers, creating tension or discord within the family. Online couponing is a worthy and perfectly commendable pursuit. However, if you let yourself loose sight of the purpose of this activity, it can take over your life. You can get coupons online all the time, each day. In is true, that new coupons are available each and every hour on the Internet.

Finding and obtaining online coupons is without a doubt a solitary activity. This means getting away from your family for a little while. there is no douht that many web site gives a bundles of online coupons and comparing offers, but this search will take more and more time. Online coupon forums will introduce you to many new friends and you can spend hours discussing deals, coupons, and how to save money with other coupon addicts.

To avoid tension or discord, limit the time you spend locating, comparing, discussing or trading online coupons. Pick another time when other people living in the home will not feel left out. Do not let your family feel that your coupon obsession is directing their lives. Nor is your husband obliged to stop at every store for which you have redeemable coupons, you do not have to eat at a restaurant just because you can redeem a couple of coupons there.

Coupon shoppers who have become crazed forget the real benefit of using internet coupons. Rather than saving money for the house and obtaining gratification, they usually spend too much. Combined with the time spent online and away from other family members,

Creative Cooking School

If you are seeking to impress your guests at your next dinner party or special event enrolling in a cooking school will teach the necessary skills and culinary tips to properly prepare gourmet food. Most of the larger retail grocery stores have a gourmet foods isle. If you cannot find what you are hungry for there try a quick online search.

Many of the gourmet meats and poultry such as "Kobi" beef and barbequed or smoked ribs and turkey are available locally at privately owned butcher shops or in some of the larger super markets. You can also have some of these items shipped from online stores.

If you do live in an area that has a great supply of gourmet meats make friends with the in house butcher. Tell him what type of event you are planning and how many people will be attending. He will be able to furnish you with all the information about the type of meat and its cost that you can serve to your guests that is sure to impress.

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world and gourmet coffee is most peoples' favorite. Coffee really presents a universe of choices, and especially if you entertain a lot you are going to want to have a good selection of coffee to choose from. Different gourmet coffees have different tastes and it is important that before you actually purchase any coffee you determine how you want to brew your coffee.

Starting or finishing a meal of finer gourmet foods with a cup of gourmet coffee is adamant. If you have spent the time and extra money on the main course you will also want to serve the most flavorful cup of java. Starting with a flavored coffee and ending with a cappuccino or espresso is recommended.

Nothing is makes a better accompaniment to coffee or a better finish to a dinner of finer gourmet foods than gourmet chocolate.

No one would turn away a gift of dark gourmet chocolate. In fact, chocolates are probably one of the most popular gift items and it is available in such a variety of favorites. You can choose from truffles made of gourmet chocolate, a chocolate mouse, or chocolate dipped marshmallows.

There is an extensive selection of gourmet foods to choose from these days, most of which have been around since ancient times. Although these foods typically require more time and effort to cook it is always well worth it to take gourmet cooking classes, especially if you are entertaining guests and want to make a great impression.

SodaStream

In 1903, SodaStream was born. Giles Gilby invented a carbonation system which made standard water into fizzy water; it was originally sold to the upper classes. Assorted flavours were introduced in the 1920s. Cherry ciderette and sarsaparilla were among the new choices. In countries such as the UK, Germany and Australia it enjoyed vast success In the 1970s and 80s.

The company underwent numerous changes in ownership, even being part of the Cadbury Schweppes empire at one stage. 1998 saw the company change hands for the final time when purchased by Soda Club, which at that time was the biggest supplier of SodaStream to Israel. Soda Club made a bid to change the brand from SodaStream to Soda-Club, but the name of the brand remained SodaStream.

More recently Soda Club sought to revive the SodaStream brand. Focusing on the health and diet issues that are so prevalent in this day and age, SodaStream was relaunched with a new machine and many new flavours, concentrating on producing a healthy alternative to fizzy, sugar-rich drinks such as Coca Cola and Pepsi.

In basic terms, the SodaStream product is a home carbonation kit, which allows you to change water into sparkling water, as well as allowing you to add low-calorie flavours such as cola and orange. A large assortment of calorie-free flavours to flavour sparkling water to great taste is sold at allfreightfree.com.

Here's how the SodaStream machine works: it forces co2 into a water-filled bottle suitable for pressurising. The co2 turns the water into sparkling (carbonated) water. This process of dissolving co2 is what we call carbonation. The carbonated water can then be drunk on its own as sparkling water, or mixed with flavours to create tasty, healthy treats. Once the co2 canisters have been used up they can be sent back to Soda-Club who recycle the canisters by refilling them with co2 then sending them back out.

As far as the actual health and diet benefits gained from drinking SodaStream, it is claimed that all their flavours are completely sugar-free and contain a maximum of 2 calories per 100ml, surely good news for parents concerned about their children's diet.

The SodaStream machine adds only co2 to the water, meaning it does not have the added sugar that some bottled sparkling water contains; consequently, there is little discernable difference from normal water.

SodaStream have made much of their environmental and health credentials, going so far as to claim that every litre bottle of SodaStream made saves three aluminum cans. The result is that over a span of 3 years, a family of four could slash their soft-drink-related packaging usage by over 90%. This is a big claim, one that should stand them in good stead in this environmentally conscious age. It is clear that Sodastream has developed into a realistic alternative to the big players in the soft drink world.

Your Thailand Vacation Food Extravaganza

I love Thai food Even before I went on my first Thailand vacation , I frequented Thai food haunts first in London, then when I moved to New Zealand, I discovered a couple of Thai eateries in the New Zealand capital, Wellington

And then I went on an extended Asia vacation. And here, in the Land of Smiles the Thai food is authentic . You can really taste the subtle blend of spices and texures that make Thai food an experience in itself .

I was amazed , though, to discover how different the the dishes are in the many provinces in Thailand. There are four major regions and they have their own special cuisine. And occasionally you can find foreign aspects in the dishes that have combined with Thai cooking over the years and melted into the distinct Thai flavour.

For example, the Northern part of Thailand evolved its own cultural identity that is not only different in language and legends but also in its food . Over the { centuries aeons}, this part of Thailand was ruled sometimes by Myanmar (Burma), and sometimes by the old kingdom of Ayutthaya that attracted international traders.

So, in the North you get the traditional sticky rice that is made into bite size portions with your fingers and then used to mop up the sauces from other dishes . TheNorthern regional chillies are much milder than the fiery offerings from other parts of the country , and you can find specialities like moo ( Pork ) that is deep fried until it is crispy .

In the Northeast this gastronomic wonderland , in Issan as it is known locally the food is spicy and not for the faint hearted. Some of the local dishes include the notoriousSom Tam, or green papaya salad,. Lap which is a hot and spicy ground meat or chicken salad, and the flavoursome Kai Yang, barbequed chicken. Like the Thais in the North, they like their rice glutinous, and here they use it as a sweet dish as well. Sticky rice and mango is one of my favourites.

The central region of this food paradise is where the the Thai dishes that you know about come from. Native spices such as garlic, black pepper and fish sauce were over time complimented with coriander, lime and tomato. The chilli pepper, without which a Thai meal wouldn't be a Thai meal, was introduced from the Americas . This is interesting because these peppers are now essential in Thai cooking .

Fruit plays an important role in a Thai meal, and often you get a complimentary plate of fresh local fruit to round off your meal .

The influence of the Malaysian peninsula can be noticed in the food of Southern Thailand. As this area is also surrounded by the sea, there is plenty of excellent freshly caught seafood available. Lobsters, crabs, squids, scallops, mussels all have their place in a Thai meal .

Coconut milk is used here to take the heat off the chilli-laced curries and soups . The oil of the coconut is for frying, and the white insides you eat as a flavoring . Cashew nuts are grown here, and the locals make a really great dish which you may know as chicken and cashew nut .

I like the spicy yellow curry, and the mild Massaman curry which is more akin to an Indian, Korma style curry . Satay which are pieces of charcoal grilled chicken, beef or pork cooked on skewers and served with a palate testing peanut and chilli sauce is yet another Thai food experience that has become part of International cuisine.

With such a variety and diversity of food in Thailand it's not surprising that the Thais spend a considerable time each day eating. I wonder where they put it all...?

Gourmet Food Gifts

It can safely be said that people of different persuasions and of different ages all love receiving gourmet food gifts regardless of the occasion and whether it is a birthday or even anniversary or for that matter Christmas and even Mother’s and Father’s Day, such gifts are most welcome. In fact, giving such gifts is one surefire method of pleasing the recipient since it helps to make them feel special and who doesn’t like biting into some tasty morsels of food?

There are hundreds of websites that allow people to purchase gourmet food online. You can buy everything from cheese and meats, drinks, even crackers and breads and desserts that make your mouth water just by looking at a picture of it.  Anyone with access to the Internet has access to these gourmet foods.

Reasonable Convenience

If you love to cook and love to make fine cuisine, but you don't have access to gourmet food shops in your area, you can purchase gourmet food online. These items are delivered to your home -- even frozen foods can be delivered through overnight shipping. If you do order gourmet food online, expect to pay a significant price both for the food and shipping, especially for foods that easily spoil. Still, the extra price is well worth the convenience.  It's cheaper than taking an airplane to the country and back!

And, chocolates are something that everybody loves and thus well worth including in gourmet food gifts, and with so many different chocolate types, you would have your hands full choosing from fudges, and exotic cream and nut filled chocolates. In fact, it is safe to say that there is perhaps no other item that is quite as loved as chocolates and they would make excellent gourmet food gifts items.

But, gourmet food gifts need not only contain foods since drinks too are especially popular and well loved by recipients and if you select some choice coffees that are well flavored or even think of giving flavored teas, your gourmet food gifts would have a special effect on the recipient. Including fine wines is also recommended and they may also be accompanied by fine cheese, though to ensure the recipient’s health, organic teas may make a better choice.

You now have a greater opportunity to create traditional and gourmet dishes in the comfort of your home. This can also be of great benefit to smaller catering companies and restaurants that need to locate ingredients at lower rates because of the Internet.  There is a greater level of competition among gourmet food providers, because now anyone can buy from anywhere.  They are no longer limited to what is available in their town or available through their contacts.  A simple web search can provide them with plenty of places and prices to choose from.

EU Allows Rosé Thats A Mix Of Red and White Wine

When red and white wine sales are steadily dwindling around Europe, what could the answer be? Mix them both together to make rosé says the EU.

Rosé wine has been produced for decades all around the world and there are a number of different ways to produce it, all of which take great care and refined processes. The most widely used approach is to follow the “nobler” tradition of crushing red grapes and soak up the red tannin from the mixture before it can stain into the wine. This produces a lovely rose-coloured appearance and a light glow.

Brussels have had another idea for making the very popular rosé wine and it is a little more crude. They have put forward a proposition to make the wine by taking white wine (around 95%) and mixing in a little red wine until the mixture takes on a pinkish look. On April 27th a draft EU plan will be put to a final vote and would allow the new type of wine to be produced and sold anywhere in Europe

Wine makers in Provence, where the majority of France’s rosé wine is currently made are outraged. Since white wine sales were overtaken by rosé in France, speculation is rife about those who currently make red and white wine attempting to cash in. It is easy to see why people would want to be in the business of selling rosé wine at the moment as its popularity is at an all time high. Rosé wine racks up a figure of 22% of total wine sales in France currently.

Experts however believe that the new blended wine will not catch on in the way producers hope. Most believe that rosé has a distinctive and eloquent taste and aroma that has been established through many years of trial and error. This is not something they think can be matched by such amateurish methods

Common Cake Decorating Terms

If you are just starting in cake decorating, then you may be confused by the many cake decorating terms.  While these terms may be scary at first, if you take the time to get familiar with them, then you will attack them with assurance. Seen below are some of the most common cake decorating terms, and their definitions.  Once you master these terms you will likely be inspired with your own cake decorating ideas.

Airbrushing

Airbrushing a cake is a fast means to add a scene or setting onto a cake's surface with food coloring.  Airbrushing is accomplished using an artist's paint gun that uses an compression air pump.

Border

The border of a cake is a uninterrupted ribbon of icing that decorates the top, sides, and/or bottom edges of a cake.

Buttercream

Buttercream is a rich icing that is created by mixing either butter or shortening (or both) with icing sugar, and beaten until smooth. Buttercream is an easy, all-purpose icing that can be used to both embellish and cover a cake

Decorating Bags

Decorating bags are known also as icing bags, frosting bags, or pastry bags.  Decorating bags are small, triangular shaped bags that are made from cloth, plastic, or parchment paper.  The bags are equipped with ornamenting tips and filled with frosting and used to pipe ornamental items such as icing flowers, edges, scrollwork, and lacework patterns.

Decorating Tips

Decorating tips are sometimes called decorating nozzles. Decorating tips are used to create decorative items such as basketweave patterns, icing flowers, and shell edges. Tips come in several shapes, and are used with an icing or pastry bag that is filled with frosting.  When the bag is pressed, the icing or cream is piped out in the shape of the tip.  Drop flowers are produced with a single squeeze of the icing bag, while rose petals are produced with expert maneuvering of the tip and icing.

Flower Nail

A flower nail is shaped like a nail with an large, oversized head.  A flower head is used for piping royal icing and buttercream flowers that are transferred to a cake after drying.

Frosting

Frosting and icing are often exchanged for each other. Those in the US tend to use the word "frosting" to mean the creamy, sugary substance covering a cake, while those in other English speaking countries tend to use the term "icing". In the U.S.A., "frosting" typically refers to the icing that is spread over the cake, while "icing" ordinarilyrefers to decorative icing, such as piped borders and icing roses.

Fondant

Fondant is also known as sugar paste.  Fondant is an icing sugar dough that can be used in much the same way as pie dough.  Fondant can be rolled into smooth sheets and draped on top of cakes, creating a smooth, flawless finish.

Ganache

Ganache is a velvety smooth frosting.  It is produced by melting either dark or white chocolate, then mixing it with heavy cream.

Gumpaste

Gumpaste is an eatable, clay-like dough.  It is prepared by mixing glycerin, gum Arabic, and icing sugar.  Gumpaste is used to mold edible flowers and figures. Gum paste can also be rolled exceedingly thin and used to make complicated ribbons and lacework, as well as delicate flower petals.

Marzipan

Marzipan is a doughy almond substance.  It is prepared from the same ingredients as almond paste, though marzipan has more sugar, fewer almonds, and has a smoother consistency.  Marzipan is frequently used for modeling cake decorations, and as a base covering underneath fondant.

Piping

Piping is a adorning technique where a decorating bag or tube is filled with icing and equipped with a decorating tip.  Piping takes place when the bag islightly squeezed to make shaped dots and ribbons of icing toadorn cakes and other baked goods.

Royal Icing

Royal icing is a sweet white frosting that is made by whipping icing sugar with either fresh egg whites or dried egg whites and meringue powder. Royal icing makes well-defined icing borders.  It is ideal for piping complicated writing, borders, scrollwork, and lacework on cakes. Royal icing dries very hard and preserves indefinitely if stored in a cool, dry place, but is susceptible to softening and drooping in high humidity.

The Popular Dirt Dessert Recipe

A dirt dessert recipe can be quite popular with children.  They aren't feeding dirt to their children.  This is pudding and cookies.  Look for such recipes on web sites.

Most kids can handle making a dirt dessert recipe.  It's easy.  It's no harder than mixing powdered pudding.  They'll enjoy making it and then eating it.  They will also get a sense of pride when other people enjoy it too.

So what is a good dirt dessert recipe?  It's described on some sites as creative cooking.  It can be served in a pail – like kids use on the beach.  It involves crushing cookies, such as Oreo cookies, and layering a cream cheese pudding mixture with the cookies.  Normally a final layer is added just before serving.  This ensures that it has the consistency of real dirt.  Some folks even put candy flowers on the top.  The illusion of dirt is strong.  Serve it with a shovel.

No dirt dessert recipe is complete without a bag for crushing the cookies.  Consider that crushing the cookies just sitting on the counter would make a huge mess.  There is also the temptation to eat some of the cookies.  It's not uncommon to end up with not enough cookies to make a proper amount of fake soil for the desert.  Tape their mouths shut.

The dirt cake recipe isn't for dieters.  There are often nearly 1000 calories per serving, as well as 50 grams of fat in 100 grams of carbohydrates.  It's enough to bust the best diet.

To find a dirt dessert recipe use Yahoo.  Yahoo returns over 1,700,000 websites for that search term.  Yahoo leads to one recipe with an imaginative ingredient.  Add Fresca to the pudding mix.  Otherwise it's pretty standard.

A child who consumes dirt instead of a dirt dessert recipe may have issues.  It's usually easy to stop dirt eating by using behavior modification techniques.  Talk to a pediatrician if you have a problem.

There's the scoop for a great dirt dessert recipe.

Solar Cookers

Don't read this article on desert recipes expecting to get ideas for sweet after dinner treats.  Don't read it for tips on healthy ends to nutritious meals either.  Please don't be confused.  A cake can be a dessert a hot place where it doesn't rain much is a desert.  Let's talk about cooking in the desert.

The desert has one element that makes it ideal for cooking food.  Look up in the sky, it's the sun.  A typical desert day can be as hot as the hundred 150° or more, which tells us what a great source of heat the sun truly is.  If harnassed, it can mean cooking without modern appliances like microwaves, stoves or even gas or charcoal grills.

Solar cookers can be anything from a fancy, modern store bought model to something as simple as a pizza box with insulation and reflective material (such as tin foil.)  Such cookers can reach up to 300°F, perfect for many desert recipes.  Everything from eggs stakes can be cooked on this.  But keep two things in mind.  Number one this is a slow cooking technique.  It takes all day to cook.  It takes constant realignment of the solar cooker to keep the sun focused.  The second is that it doesn't work at night or on cloudy days – any time there is no sun.

There are positives to solar cooking as well.  Slow cooked food is melt in your mouth moist.  And it really isn't possible to burn anything because there are hours of leeway in cooking times rather than minutes or even seconds with other cooking methods.  Have your doubts?  Leave a steak on the grill for five minutes too long.  Plus cooking over a longer period means more time to savor the aromas.  Food tastes better when some care is taken in the preparation.  Contrary to what many people believe solar cookers can and do brown foods.

Do you want to hear some desert recipes?  For some creative cooking ideas there's everything from spaghetti squash with sausage to good old eggs and bacon  A quick search on Yahoo will find even more.

It may seem impossible to cook desert recipes with just the power of the sun.  But it works.

7 Tips to Make This Your Best BBQ Season Ever

When you think of barbeque, you think of nice weather, tempting aromas and excellent food. An outdoor barbeque is the perfect way to enjoy the nice weather while preparing fine food. In some areas, you can only enjoy this pastime for a few months of the year. So make the most of it with these great BBQ tips.

1. Start by selecting the right kind of BBQ grill for your needs. There are charcoal and electric grills, as well as those that use either propane or natural gas. Barbeques come in many sizes, either portable or for permanent installation. Many have special features such as built in thermometers, removable drip pans, and side burners. Using a smoker for long term, slow cooking rather than a barbeque is a great option in many circumstances.

2. Enhance your enjoyment by learning more about BBQ rubs, sauces and woods. When used properly, these will all help to intensify the flavor of a good cut of meat.

3. Get the right barbeque tools that will make your job a pleasure. Getting a good quality flipper will make the job so much easier. To measure internal meat temperature, a good quality BBQ thermometer is a must.

4. Now consider how your food should be prepared for best results. You'll need to make some decisions about whether to BBQ slow or fast. If you're cooking brisket in a smoker, slow is the only way to go. A hamburger requires a grill. If you slow cook it, you'll have a hockey puck. The means of cooking needs to match what's being cooked.

5. Don't spoil the enjoyment of your BBQ cookout by neglecting safety. Of course, BBQs are hot and there's always the risk of burning yourself. But you can also become injured from improper use of your barbeque tools. Stay alert and keep a firm grip on your tools so you don't ruin your good time.

6. Bugs can put a damper on your enjoyment while you're barbequing. It isn't difficult to chase away the bugs when you're grilling. Keep a garden hose handy to spray them away. A hair dryer is also useful for chasing them off. Even the lowly fly swatter can be perfectly effective. Don't use bug spray in the area where you're grilling. You don't want all those chemicals mixing with your food.

7. Having the right tools available for cleanup will make the job easier and motivate you to actually do it. Use oven cleaner to facilitate the process. There are also barbeques that have easy clean features. If you clean your grill after each use, your food will taste better.

All Kids Love Maple Candy

I always ensure the house is filled with lots of maple syrup. It’s an absolute favorite with my kids especially during breakfast. People eat it on things like toast, waffles, pancakes, french toast, or even on pasta. I was afraid after a point that I was being to easy and giving them too much sugar (this is a problem because I have a MAJOR sweet tooth and I can't stay away from the sugar myself even). So I did some research of my own and was surprised to find out that maple syrup is one of the very few sweet treats that can actually be good for my kids. A benefit is that it has less calories then a person would think, and has far fewer amounts of sugar than honey does. Secondly, it’s an excellent source of two trace minerals – zinc and manganese – which are important for energy building and the body’s immune system and antioxidant defences.

So what was a mom to do after knowing that her picky eaters of kids were actually consuming a healthy treat without them realizing it? To get it started simply!

Now I use pure organic canadian maple syrup as a sweetener for their oatmeal, to pour on top of baked squash and sweet potatoes, and to drizzle over their peanut butter and banana sandwich (skip the jelly, will you?). My children really like pure maple butter on their waffles and drizzled on their pancakes.  To make maple butter, just blend 1 pound of softened butter with ½ cup maple syrup, roll between parchment paper, store in the fridge, and cut into discs as needed.  For an easy snack or school lunchbox treat, I make maple cookies, which is really just low-fat oatmeal or plain cookies with a maple glaze on top. To make the glaze, just combine 1 C organic canadian maple sugar, ¼ C confectioners' sugar, 1 tsp maple extract, and ¼ C unsalted butter in a pan, medium-heat until just about to boil, then dip or brush the top of your cookies with the glaze while it’s still hot. Let the cookies cool before you eat them, they taste even better the next day.

Here's something to keep in mind when you go shopping, really look for organic and pure maple syrup instead of picking up cheap flavored and colored synthetic syrup. It is generally more expensive, but because you don't get diluted syrup you get a richer, tastier flavor and is worth whatever small amount of extra money it costs. Also, the lighter the color, the more subtle the flavor. If you want to use syrup to cook try to get darker amber syrup as opposed to lighter stuff.  Finally, remember that everything should be consumed in moderation and for goodness’ sake, don’t forget to brush those tiny teeth afterwards!

Dirt Cake Recipe

A dirt cake recipe can be great fun for children.  This type of cake has elements that resemble dirt and sometimes mud.  Ingredients include pudding and crushed Oreos.  It's easy to find recipes.

dirt cake recipe

The Disney family website has an excellent dirt cake recipe.  According to Disney it's a real ice breaker.  People of all ages enjoy it.  Make it in a flower pot.  This recipe has pudding as well as cream filled chocolate cookies.  Build up layers of pudding, whipped cream and crushed cookies.  It's the cookies that give it the dirt look.

You won't maintain a diet with a dirt cake recipe.  However, it can be included in a healthy diet.  There can be up to 1000 calories per serving.  It's also loaded with fat and carbohydrates.  You'd better really watch the portion size.  Kids usually aren't dieting.

Find a dirt cake recipe with a quick Google search.  Over 236,000 pages are returned.  One recipe comes from a popular cookie brand.  Kids enjoy it during the summer.  This one is made inside a kids pail and shovel set.  Oreo cookie crumbs are prominent in this recipe.  Then top it off with gummy worms.  To the delight of the children it looks like a pale full of dirt.

dirt cake recipe

A dirt cake recipe isn't for all children.  They consume dirt.  This is common for children, in moderation.  Kids who constantly eat dirt have an eating disorder.  They eat things that are not food.  It might mean the child is mentally retarded.  Sometimes children have iron deficiency.  Dirt contains iron.

Dirt eaters can run into problems.  This includes ingesting a parasite and becoming infected.  That's a real risk where animals defecate.  It can also lead to lead poisoning.  Consult a doctor if your child eats dirt.  The behavior can be stopped.  Some children can be distracted from dirt with something else they like.

dirt dessert recipe

A dirt dessert recipe is something children can make.  It's easy.  If a kid can measure milk they can make this.  Not only do kids enjoy eating this, they enjoy making it.  They will also get a sense of pride when other people enjoy it too.

Do you know a dirt dessert recipe?  It's described on some sites.  It's often made in a flower pot.  It involves crushing cookies, such as Oreo cookies, and layering a cream cheese pudding mixture with the cookies.  More cookies are sprinkled on top before eating.  Then the top really appears to be dirt.  Some folks even put candy flowers on the top.  The illusion of dirt is strong.  Served with a shovel it's even more fun.

dirt dessert

A good dirt dessert recipe suggests a bag to hold the cookies.  That way there won't be cookie crumbs on the floor.  Many people like to munch on the cookies that are supposed to be crushed.  That could lead to a cookie shortage.  Tape their mouths shut.

If you're health conscious you may want to avoid a dirt dessert recipe.  It has over 50 grams of fat, 100 grams of carbs and a ton of calories.  As far as dieting is concerned that's a deadly combination.

Yahoo is a good source for a dirt dessert recipe.  Yahoo returns over 1,700,000 websites for that search term.  One of the links from Yahoo goes into a recipe that has a pretty unique ingredient.  It calls for some Fresca poured into the pudding.  Otherwise it's pretty standard.

Watch out for children who don't eat a dirt dessert recipe because they're eating dirt from the ground.  It's usually easy to stop dirt eating by using behavior modification techniques.  Take your child to a pediatrician.

Dirt Cake

A tasty dessert is dirt cake.  It's popular for kids' parties.  The cake looks a lot like dirt.  To kids it's the height of a funny joke.

dirt cake

When kids eat real dirt instead of a dirt cake it can be cause for alarm.  This could be due to mental retardation.  It's also dangerous.  Animal feces in the dirt might attract parasites.  Lead poisoning can also come from eating dirt.  Many kids munch a little dirt.  But for others it's an obsession.  Anemia can cause this behavior.  That is having an iron efficiency in the blood.  In such a case a vitamin or supplement that contains iron will help the child kick the habit.

Dirt cake isn't really cake.  It's really pudding, cookie crumbs, some type of whipped dessert topping, and a few other simple ingredients.  It's often made in a flower pot.  Many times it's dished out with a shovel to add to the novelty.  It can even be topped with gummy worms or candy flowers.

dirt cake recipe

Many recipes for dirt cake can be found online.  Perform a Google search.  It will result in over 420,000 Web links.  Many of the recipes contain the same ingredients.

Dirt cake is prepared by crushing sandwich cookies, such as Oreos.  Layer crumbs, then pudding, then crumbs.  The top layer of cookie crumbs is usually added just before serving to maintain the texture of dirt.  Whoever invented it was a genius.

If you're on a diet get ready to cheat if you're going to serve or eat dirt cake.  Almost every ingredient is fattening.  It has about 1000 calories, 100 grams of carbs and 50 grams of fat.  Dieters know that's a no no.

But healthy eating doesn't preclude dirt cake.  A taste is fine.  Or make sure it's the one food you eat during the week that's off the diet.  Diets are a matter of longer term.  A treat now and then won't hurt.

Tips for Outdoor Cooking in a BBQ Pit

If you're looking for an authentic barbeque experience, you should try using an open pit BBQ. When you cook your meat in a BBQ pit, there's a greater concentration of smoke and heat. The taste is out of this world.

This method of cooking outdoors is ideal for larger cuts of meat such as a roast. If your pit is big enough, it's possible to cook a whole pig or a section of beef. Just remember that it will take a long time to cook this much meat, anywhere up to 10 hours.

You have two basic choices in open BBQ pits, modern and traditional. The traditional open pit is inground and involves digging a hole. You then lay in your wood or charcoal and light it.

You can place your food on a skewer and hold it over the flames while it cooks. You can also lay a grill over the flames to hold the meat. Another option is to wrap the food in foil and lay it in among the coals after the fire has died down.

A modern BBQ pit is typically constructed above ground. It's generally built from concrete, stone or brick. A BBQ pit features a firebox where the wood or briquettes can smolder. You'll likely want to attach a grill to the pit. Just make sure it's far enough away from the source of heat so your meat won't become overcooked.

There are a couple of ways you can cook your food in an open pit BBQ. You can use either indirect or direct heat. When you cook with direct heat, the wood or coals in the firebox are still actively burning, and you place the meat on a grill above the flames. In order to manage the cooking temperature, many people locate the coals at one end of the pit and the food at the other. This method cooks your food relatively quickly and is perfect for tender cuts of meat.

You can also use indirect heat to cook your meat, which is sometimes called pit cooking. Cooking with indirect heat involves using a very low temperature to cook the food. You start by lighting a fire and letting it burn for a while so the pit can absorb the heat. The objective is to store up a lot of heat in the sides of the BBQ pit.

Once the fire burns out or you douse it, you place the meat on the grill. You then need to cover up the pit. The heat that has been absorbed into the sides of the pit will do the job of cooking the meat. With this style of cooking, it takes a long time before your meal is done. But it's ideal for tougher cuts of meat. Some people consider it to the best BBQ you can eat.

For Cheaper, Better Meals, Try A Pressure Cooker

With today’s busy lifestyles and budget crunches, using a pressure cooker is a great way to make meals in a hurry. It's great for fixing healthier foods due to the fact it preserves the flavors and nutrients, and it can tenderize leaner cuts of meat. As an added bonus, it cooks foods three to ten times faster than ordinary methods. Some foods, in fact, cook even more quickly in a pressure cooker than they do in a microwave!

Safety Comes First!

If you’ve put off buying a pressure cooker because of safety concerns, take another look at the pressure cooker. Improved designs of today's pressure cookers means that have not just one safety feature, but sometimes up to three safety devices to prevent accidents. If you follow the cooking and safety procedures outlined in the manual that comes with your nice new pressure cooker, you probably have more chance of accidentally burning yourself on a hot pan coming out of the oven than having a problem with the pressure cooker.

Just keep in mind the main rule of pressure cooking - never, ever open the cooker while it is still under pressure!

Reasons To Have A Pressure Cooker

For healthy cooking on a budget, a nice new pressure cooker is a great investment. With a minimum of care, it can last through many years of hard service. Some of the advantages of using a pressure cooker include:

  • Using less energy because it takes less time for foods to cook, saving money and energy resources.
  • Pressure cookers work at all altitudes. All that's needed is to adjsut the amount of pressure and cooking times.
  • An entire meal can be quickly cooked in one pot by using a rack to enable cooking a variety of foods.
  • It saves money by tenderizing budget meat cuts, and saves time by cooking food so quickly.
  • Because foods cook quickly with so little liquid in an airtight environment, the nutrients are preserved.

Not only is a pressure cooker great for meals, but it’s bigger cousin, the pressure canner, is absolutely essential for canning many vegetables and meats.

Choosing The Right Pressure Cooker

One of the first decisions is whether you want an aluminum or a stainless steel pressure cooker. Aluminum pressure cookers are more lightweight and more economical to buy. These types are good conductors of heat. Unlike most other aluminum cookware, however, pressure cookers aren't availalbe with nonstick coatings. These types of finishes just don't last in the conditions inside a pressure cooker.

Although more expensive than aluminum, stainless steel pressure cookers are also heavier. However, they have the same long lasting, lustrous finish common to most stainless steel cookware. Stainless steel is a poor conductor of heat however, so choose one with a bimetal base to improve cooking performance.

Different Size Pressure Cookers Available.

Pressure cookers are generally sold by their total liquid capacity. However, depending on what food is being cooked, in reality you can only use half to two thirds of their total liquid capacity. The most commonly available models come in the following sizes:

  • 4-quart: This is a good size for a single person or couple. An entire meal for 1-2 people can be cooked in this size, but it would likely only have room for a single course for a bigger family, such as vegetables.
  • 6-quart: A great size for families, this is probably the most popular sized model for cooking.
  • 8-quart: For bigger families, this size works best. This size can also be used for pressure canning pint and half-pint jars.

Larger pressure cookers, such as the 17 or 22 quart models, are generally referred to and used as pressure canners. It would take a large group of people to warrant pressure cooking in such a large size.

A High Pressure Kitchen!

A pressure cooker is a great addition in today's kitchens. It helps the budget, makes meal preparation convenient, and preserves the nutritents in foods. Using a pressure cooker makes being under pressure a good thing!

How To Buy Cookware

Making the decision on the right cookware for your kitchen can be difficult.  Buying good cookware is the goal for most people, but they don't want to spend huge amounts of money to get it.    Those that are really into cooking, will be looking for more expensive, chef-quality cookware.  Choosing the right cookware depends on what meets your needs and fits into your budget.

Prices on Cookware

The cost of cookware varies greatly.  The first thing you need when deciding what cookware to buy is a budget.  What price range do you have in mind for buying cookware?  More to the point, how much you can afford to spend?  Cookware is necessary, and a good set is a great investment, but it still isn't a good idea to spend so much you put yourself in debt!

Don't buy your cookware until you know how much to spend, then look for deals.  Most items go on sale at some time, and cookware is no exception.  Manufacturers sometmes have special deals on cookware, and many stores have sales on it.

According to Hugh Rushing, Executive Vice President at Cookware Manufacturers Association, "There are two big seasons for cookware and cookware promotions.  One is in the spring, in April and May, coinciding with the graduation and wedding season. The other is in October and November, with promotions in regard to the holidays."

If at all possible, try to buy your cookware during those months so you can get the best deal.

What’s In the Set?

The next thing to check is how many pieces are in the set of cookware.  A set of cookware may have just a few pots and pans, or it may include a wide variety of cookware.    Take into consideration how many pieces you are getting.    Bear in mind that the lids for the different pots and pans also count as pieces of the set.  As an example, a 6-piece set of cookware usually has 3 pots and pans, and 3 lids.

Quick Clean-up

The ease of cleaning is another important consideration when buying a set of cookware.    With everyone leading such busy lives, most people don’t want to spend a lot of time cleaning up in the kitchen.  If washing pots and pans by hand doesn't appeal to you, be sure to buy a set that is safe to put in the dishwasher.

Non-stick pots and pans are popular for this reason, but be aware that some of the cheaper sets have coatings that will flake off with continued use.  Eating the coating isn't a good part of anyone's diet, so get as high quality cookware as you can to avoid this problem as much as possible.    Many other types of cookware are also easy to clean, so coated cookware isn’t the only choice.

Putting It All Together

Once you’ve decided on a budget for cookware, how many pieces you need for the bare essentials in your kitchen, and how important ease of cleaning is to you, it’s time to look for the best match of cookware sets.A wide range of cookware sometimes makes it hard to choose, but it also gives you more options in finding a set that's just right for you.
